2007 Events in Review

First off (and once again) congratulations to everyone with our successful Haunting History 2007. We had the best attendance ever, and made by far the most money of any single event we have ever done.  In the next few days a list of all of the volunteers for the event should be on our web site, so please take a look.

We need someone to be the point person for Trees to Trails. This person will organize and keep track of the volunteers (some have already signed up!) and be present when the mulch is spread in the spring.

Steve Hamilton has volunteered to organize Spring Fling 2008. He has a few speakers lined up already including SOAR and Walden's Puddle.  What if we included some sort of solar energy exhibit at next year's event?

Austin Peay students have been out at the park filming recently.  They are working at finishing up the new documentary video which will be shown to visitors at the park.  The Friends group commissioned this project a little over a year ago.  This video is another way that the Friends of Dunbar Cave is promoting and protecting Dunbar Cave State Natural Area.

Ron Hunter and I met with a Montgomery County Commissioner's committee recently in an attempt to get the county to endorse any Dunbar Cave capital improvements to the state legislature.  I have received feedback that our presentation was successful, so all that is left is to iron out a few details.  Hopefully we can help to get some projects moving along with the county's endorsement.

We as a group had already decided to not have a meeting in December, so it looks like our next meeting will be on January 17th.

Finally, here is a year-end summary of our accomplishments in 2007:

Trees to Trails yielded a whole lot of mulch which was spread around the picnic table area.  Much of the mulch is still there, protecting the roots and making having a picnic a nicer experience.  We had many volunteers from the community help out.

Spring Fling 2007 was once again a successful, fun, and educational event.  Hundreds of people from the community came to see the shows and went away with a newfound respect for plants, animals, and our environment.

At our July meeting a new slate of board members was selected.  We have a good mix of old-timers and new folks, and a very dedicated hard working bunch to boot.

Cooling at the Cave, a new event for us, was a resounding success and a whole lot of fun.  It was a brutally hot summer day and yet it really was "cool at the cave".

The year was capped off by Haunting History with a new group of young actors and some of our newer members stepping up to make for two really great evenings of fun and excitement.

Have a good holiday season asee you next year

Thanks to all of you
